CRT / Myopia

For the past several decades, Myopia, or near sightedness is not only on the rise, but also with increasing severity. This use to mean that individuals, especially children, who could not or did not want laser eye surgery, had to rely on glasses or contacts to see. Today, an excellent alternative is CRT overnight vision correcting contacts.

CRT is a non-surgical method to correct near sightedness and mild astigmatism. People wear the CRT contact lenses during sleep, and wake with excellent vision, without glasses and contacts. The beneficial effect usually lasts 24-48 hours, but may rarely last as long as several weeks.  They are especially useful for active children, who prefer not to wear sports goggles. They are also great for young adults whose vision has not stabilized. While not conclusive, there is strong evidence that CRT may slow the progression of near sightedness in children.

It is FDA approved for both adults and children, age 8 years and up. Dr. Ky is the only ophthalmologist fellowship trained in Pediatric Ophthalmology to practice CRT in New York.

FAQs

Who can use CRT?

Only your doctor can determine whether you are a candidate for CRT. Generally, it’s best used for the correction of near sightedness less than -6.00 and low levels of astigmatism. People with severe dry eyes and other eye disorders need to have them treated prior to CRT use.

Is CRT covered by my health insurance or vision plan?

CRT is not covered by any insurance. New York Eye &  Laser, P.C. does offer discounts to individuals with VSP.

How long does it take for CRT to work?

CRT requires several in-office sessions for the initial fit, including a complete dilated eye exam. Most individuals notice an improvement in vision after only two nights of wear. It generally takes about two weeks of continuous wear to achieve the desired vision correction.

How long do the CRT lenses last?

CRT lenses, unless damaged, must be replaced at least once a year. We require a follow-up exam once a year. They also need to be properly disinfected as directed by Dr. Ky every day.

When should I not use my CRT lenses?

If the eye is red, irritated or if there is a decrease in vision, stop wearing the CRT lens immediately and contact Dr. Ky’s office. It is highly recommended that a back-up pair of glasses be kept in the event one cannot use their CRT lenses for medical purposes.
